I am not a native of the Greensburg area but I remember the first time driving down Oakford Park Rd toward Jeannette and my father-in-law saying "there's Oakford Park". All I saw was a valley with a bunch of trees. Didn't understand why he had to point that out. Now years later I think what he was trying to tell me was that Oakford Park was something much more than trees. I've done a little bit of research and found that yes indeed, it must have been a special place. Hopefully someone can provide memories or stories about Oakford Park. Here is a picture from our Facebook page.
In 1878, William Darlington, owner of the land upon which now stands Idlewild Park in Ligonier, gave the right and privilege to occupy his land for picnic purposes or pleasure grounds.
Oakford Park in Jeannette (sometimes listed as Greensburg) opened as a trolley park nearly 125 yrs ago in 1896. The Oakford Park Pool was built nearly a hundred years ago.
